First off I just want to apologize for disappearing for a while this semester. It's been an incredibly hectic semester (not to mention not that interesting one as far as blog topics go) with senior design stuff, GREs, and other graduation-related things to worry about. However, I'm back, and hopefully ready to blog. I had some sad news over the last week, but I feel like it's really important to blog about/know when you're choosing a college. The, What If? situation. In my case, it's the "What if I get hurt?" situation.
Readers, I know you can probably tell from some of my blog posts, that my life goes at 100 miles per hour, with classes and involvements. I've been sidelined for a while because of an injury I've had for a while. Last week after a check-up at the Tech Health Center, I found out that my left lung had collapsed by 30%. I walked in without an appointment and knew very well I probably couldn't get an appointment, but just wanted a quick check up. I spoke with a nurse about my situation, and she immediately directed me to a doctor. Yes, it wasn't protocol, but she was more worried about my wellbeing than I was. Upon finding out (through an X-ray) about my situation, the Health Center booked me an immediate appointment with a cardiothoracic specialist that afternoon. Once there, I was given the option to 1) ignore it and have it happen again only worse, 2) get a chest tube and have a 65% recurrence rate, or 3) have surgery and only a 5% recurrence rate.
I'll let you see the expression on my face and then you can guess what I chose:
Option 3. Now, readers, let me tell you, I hope that few other Tech students ever go through this. Surgery sucks. Talking to the Dean of Students office sucks. Having to work out what you're going to do with the three tests you have sucks. But, rest assured, people at Tech are here to help you.
I've been incredibly surprised by the wealth of love and care that people at Tech have shown me in the past week. All last Monday, I had the people at the Dean of Student's office comforting me and laying out my options for the rest of the semester. It went without saying that I will be out for quite some time, but they really tried to work with me. After all, it's almost the end of the semester and to not finish at this point is a bit ridiculous. Luckily, my professors felt the same way, and their only concern was for me to get better. Tech staff and faculty really do care.
As far as friends go, my friends have been amazing and so supportive through all of this. One of my sorority sisters even registered for all my classes for me. Which is a little sad now that I think about it because it's my last registration and I don't get to do it myself... but whatever. I'll leave it on a nicer note. I woke up this morning from my afternoon nap to a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear from the staff at the Technique (Tech's student newspaper). It goes without saying that I feel so blessed for such amazing people in my life.
